NIST BMD/IBBR Seminar: Normal Tissue Metabolic Responses to Radiation Exposure: from Earth to Mars
Event Info
Event Details
Abstract
Exposure to ionizing radiation is a constant in everyday life. While most exposures fall in the low dose range, in certain cases higher radiation exposures, such as in accidental or intentional cases, can lead to acute radiation syndrome and death. In addition, future long duration missions to the Moon and Mars will expose astronauts to significant doses of space radiation with increased risks for carcinogenesis, cardiovascular and cognitive impairment, among others. Our lab has focused on metabolomic and lipidomic applications to complement current radiation biodosimetry methods (e.g. cytogenetics) by identifying biomarkers in easily accessible biofluids and designing technologies for stabilization of biosignatures. Furthermore, metabolomics, and in combination with other -omics analyses, has aided in identifying perturbations in metabolic pathways associated with spaceflight and space radiation that can provide new pathways for development of effective countermeasures for astronauts. This seminar will therefore focus on the applicability of this technology in uncovering systemic and tissue responses for effective monitoring and protection or mitigation of normal tissue exposures.
Brief bio
Evagelia (Lia) C. Laiakis is an Associate Professor at Georgetown University in the Department of Oncology at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her current research focuses on metabolomics and lipidomics for radiation biodosimetry, space biology (radiation and microgravity), normal tissue responses to different radiation qualities (primarily photons, neutrons, and protons), and evaluation of radioprotectors and mitigators. She is a Councilor-at-Large of the Radiation Research Society and an elected Council member of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP).
